So, I adore this game. Possibly one of the best text rpgs I've played, but I am pretty frustrated about something. I'm almost through my second run though, and I still find a huge problem with how people...communicate in this game, including you and Ash. A ton of spoilers below, mostly for chapter 8ish onward. Also, I refer to Ash as male, but just a small fyi that the devs have said they're open to interpretation.
First and foremost, I get that, as a game, there are severe limitations. I understand you have to force a choice sometimes to get the story rolling and to keep the game manageable. But there are a few things that I feel like are just...forced conflits because the characters are just so bad at communicating properly and you more or less have to sit back and take sides instead of asking anyone to think about it more. It's okay if Ash doesn't listen to me sometimes, but it's also very frustrating if you have no choice in the first place to say anything close to wha you want. Examples are:
- When Riley accompanies Ash to Wispy Brook, she tells him the truth about her meeting with Ezra and Ash is furious at her for lying. I actually think Ash is completely justified for being angry. In my first playthrough, Ezra kills Riley and Ash is absolutely mentally and emotionally destroyed by this. I do not think Riley is a bad person, I admire her for trying to be reasonable and good hearted despite being very deep into the Chronos mess. But from the beginning, I disliked her lack of transparency. I get she has her reasons, I would have been okay with a lot more if she took the time to sit down and make the situation and her goals clear, and at least say, "I can't tell you everything right at this moment, but know that I am on your side and hope you trust me, because I trust you". Instead, she kind of just gets agitated and upset if Ash presses the issue, and goes off to do things on her own. As harsh as it is, nobody asked her to die for Ash. She may have saved his life, but she also removed herself as a force that can do anything more in the world, and threw even more confusion, anger, and despair on Ash in the process without ever taking the time to let him decide what he wants.
And when Ash is angry at her for this, she tells him he's "cruel" and "I did everything for you". As a reader, this is childish at best and manipulative at worst. BUT, I also think Ash is acting unreasonably in this moment. She just finally was honest with him, finally ready to work WITH him, and he ends up flying off the handle, throwing a tantrum, and wanting nothing to do with it. At this point, you're given the choice of telling him to either "calm down" or "lay it all out". I know the genre saavy thing to do is to tell him to calm down, but I severely do not want to. I don't think he should calm down, I think he should be open and honest with how he feels. I don't feel like acting like another one of the poweful figures in the story that constantly belittle and patronize him. But I also don't want him to stomp away in anger with no consideration for what just happened.
I get it. Ash is flawed. Some bratty aspects still remain and I was alright with it in many instances because the writers made it feel natural. Same with Riley, I've read her letters and her oracles, I understand her motives generally and I understand she deals with a lot of guilt and heavy choices. But as the reader making these interactions, I don't want to say things I feel like are utterly stupid or constantly have to sit back and watch everyone be terrible and misunderstand each other. Flaws and conflicts drive a story, but I feel like this particular instance crossed the line of interesting into just...obnoxious.
- The Wispy Brook arcs have this issue a lot, don't they. In my original run, team 13 slowly leaves Ash one by one because...because...what? Lets see: Roger feels like Ash is hiding something, and isn't being honest about himself and the circumstances he's dragging everyone into. But he, of all people, who constantly dodges discussion about Windsorhowl and his brother, should understand best that it's difficult to speak about some things. When Ash points this out, Roger just gives a "well, I guess we're even then" and leaves Ash to essentially die. Are you serious. I do feel like Ash made the same mistake with transparency as Riley here, but seriously? Did Roger have a real reason to start suspecting Ash? Ash didn't force him to come. Ash is very easy to see through, he's upset, confused, and genuinely angry at all the bad things that have happened. I understand if Roger didnt want to put his life on the line for something he doesn't understand, I also believe that skepticism and doubt is a natural process of coming to trust someone. But acting like this? And that's only the start of the wild ride of Laying Back While Everyone Ditches Ash.
Then A.C. grows frustrated with Ash and his indecision and recklessness. This is possibly the only time I felt like someone was completely justified for how they acted, but it was still very unlike AC to leave Ash to his fate when he had put his life on the line many times before, saying "I dont want your blood on my hands". But I still think this is fine and perfectly plausible as he just discovered something he needs to do personally.
Then Elise leaves because....! Ash accidentally calls her Riley! Incredible! It's like she's his rebound girlfriend! I get that Riley is a very touchy subject for her, but with all the time she spends acting edgy, shouldn't she understand most of all that Ash is in a very mentally and emotionally troubled time? Why does she constantly expect others to compromise to her values but never in return? And instead of Ash acknowledging he did something hurtful, he tells her she's weird and she peaces out. This string of events was incredibly annoying to watch happen.
- Why does Ash constantly expect me to consider him a close friend if he knows quite literally nothing about me?
- I'm not even going to start on how Chronos and the guildmasters handle communication. I get that their deal is mostly out of my hands.
